When a book is being printed, the publisher needs to determine how many copies they will make. This number of copies is the “First Print Run.” If a book does well and sells a lot of copies, the publisher may print more books to meet that demand. Typically there is a minimum number of books that need to be printed with each of these print runs. The more books that are printed in each run, the lower the cost to print each book. These are not “sales numbers.”
Below is a database of the “First Print Run” numbers for various English manga, light novels, manhwa, manhua, and danmei. This information was taken from the publisher’s own self-reported first print run numbers. This information is sometimes provided to booksellers and librarians to help gauge interest and availability of books prior to them going on sale. None of this information was taken from private or internal documents from publishers. None of this information was taken from any current or former employees. This information was publicly available but reformatted and combined into this sortable database to focus on the English manga and light novel markets.
Accuracy of Numbers
As this information was from the publisher’s own self-reported numbers, we can not independently verify the accuracy. However there is a strong consistency between the number listed, which would indicate that these numbers are close to accurate.
When compared to “sales numbers” by third-parties, these numbers may seem inflated. However, there can be multiple factors that can be applied which account for the difference:
- “Sales Numbers” by third-parties often only show a portion of the market. There can be various online retailers and other physical/in-person stores which do not contribute to the “sales numbers” that may be available.
- Books can also be sold to Libraries and Prison systems which may not count towards “sales” calculated by third-parties
- Damage, Misprints, or other loss of goods needs to taken into account for the total number
- Many of these titles are also available in international markets outside of North America, which are often not counted by third-parties
- Distribution warehouses and storage can be holding onto a number of books
- Some books may be repackaged into box sets
- Numbers may change due to printing demands
Each publisher may have different criteria for how many books to print in their first print run. Some books may only get a single print run and then go out of print afterwards. Other publishers may have multiple print runs of a book and keep a lower stock on hand.
Missing Publishers
Not all English publishers are listed in this database. Most notably, Viz Media, the largest publisher of manga in North America, does not publish their first print numbers. If numbers do become available for Viz, or other publishers, this database will be updated.
Missing Series & Volumes
Not all series are listed in this database. Not all volumes for a particular series may be listed. The information that we have available is located in the database. Do not ask us or the publishers for the first print run numbers for any missing information. The publishers will not comment on it (unless via a press release) as the target audience for this is booksellers and librarians. As information is available, we can update the database. Any gaps in the information is missing information that the publishers did not release.
Incorrect Publisher, Release Date, Types
In the process of formatting this database we may have made some minor errors with the supplemental data for each book. Some titles may be mislabeled due to change in what imprint they were under. We will attempt to make corrections as we spot them, but some may have slipped through due to the large amount of data in the database. Please let us know if there are any errors and we can update the database so that it can be more accurate sorted and filtered.
What can I do to increase the numbers?
As a fan, the best thing you can do is pre-order your books. First print runs are heavily influenced by pre-order numbers, or the expected sales at launch date. Most physical stores allow you to pre-order books in store. If they don’t have the book on the shelves, you can put in a request and have it shipped from the warehouse to your local store. Purchasing the books within the first 2 weeks of release are the strongest indicators of a series doing well.
You can also request the book to be added to your local library. Ensure that if a book is requested, you and your friends take out the book once it arrives. Longer series can be expensive for libraries to purchase, so be sure to get the most use out of it by borrowing those print books.
If the series has a digital release before the physical book is released, be sure to buy both the digital volume as well as the physical book. Strong digital volume sales are a good indication on how well the physical books will sell in stores.
