Haruto Umezawa Profile – Jump Multi World 1993

Weekly Shonen Jump

To celebrate Weekly Shonen Jump‘s 25th anniversary, Shueisha decided to create a new style event to promote it’s history for the fans. The name of the event was called “Weekly Jump Multi World” and was a exhibition that was held in the Tokyo Dome Prism Hall between July 28th through August 15th, 1993. The event cost 700 yen for admission and guests were able to receive as special booklet which highlighted some of the items on display. The booklet was never available for sale directly. Over 48 authors provided new illustrations and congratulatory messages for this anniversary and are documented in this booklet and this is one of them. To help provide context to this profile that was captured in 1993, we have included some additional information to supplement the transcription and rough English translation.

Happy 25th anniversary Jump… Torya!!!

Seiichi “Pie” (Senpai) Celebration… Haruto

Congratulations on the 25th anniversary of Shonen Jump. I started reading Jump back in my first year of junior high, and I’ve always eagerly awaited the release day.
One day I discovered a store that would sell Shonen Jump a day early, and I was so happy that I called my friend Aki-chan to let her know too.
For everyone across the country, just like me back then who are eagerly awaiting the next Shonen Jump, please continue to burn with enthusiasm to reach the 100th or 200th anniversary, and many more after.
Huge congratulations.

In the middle of the article, there is a short description of the Hareluya (HARELUYA -ハレルヤ-) manga series which ran in Weekly Shonen Jump between issues 26 and 35 in 1992. Next there is a short description of the sequel series, BØY (BØY -ボーイ-) that started in issue 50 of Weekly Shonen Jump in 1992 and was on-going at the time.

The article ends with a 4-panel manga titled “Victory” (勝利) which was enlarged and shown on display at the Jump Multi World event in 1993. A rough English translation of the manga is included below with “Janken” being is similar to “Rock Paper Scissors”:

Panel 1:

“Ja~~
Ken~~”
“This is a sure-fire win”

Panel 2:

“Pon”

Panel 3:

Panel 4:

“Urrra~~”
“Hareluya style”
“Perfect Victory”

The following is some additional context and information not included in the article:

His debut oneshot, Minakata Yuden won the 35th Hop☆Step Award (ホップ☆ステップ賞) in 1988 and was then published in the 1988 Weekly Shonen Jump Summer Special issue. The following author comment was listed on the table of contents (with a rough English translation provided below):

高校時代、授業中ノートに落書きばかりしていたポクを見逃してくれた一握りの先生に感謝、感謝。

Thank you to all of my high school teachers who ignored me doodling in the notebooks during class.

A oneshot for Shuten☆Dōji then ran in Weekly Shonen Jump issue 39 in 1989. This oneshot would lead to the later serialization starting in 1990. Within this issue of Weekly Shonen Jump, he left the following comment (still under the pen name of Masato Umezawa and with a rough English translation provided below):

初めての本誌掲載。発売日には山手線にのって皆が読んでくれてるかチェックしよう!!

This is my first time being featured in this magazine. On release date, I’ll be taking the Yamanote Line to see if everyone is reading it!!

In the 1991 Weekly Shonen Jump Summer Special issue, he published a oneshot called Hareluya, which would later be the basis of the series with the same name. The following is his author comment under the name Masato Umezawa and with a rough English translation provided below:

最終ページをペン入れしながら、ヘンデルの「ハレルヤ」をガンガンBGMにしていました。近所に変な人と思われただろうなあ。

While I was inking the final page, I had Handel’s “Hallelujah” blaring as some background music. I’m sure my neighbors think I’m crazy.

For the first chapter of Hareluya in Weekly Shonen Jump‘s 26th issue in 1992 the series was featured on the cover and the following author comment, now under the name Haruto Umezawa, was presented in the Table of Contents (with a rough English translation provided):

ハレルヤは、でたとこ勝負のサイコロみたいな奴!でも私はこいつに賭けてますっ!!

Hareluya is like a dice-rolling gambler! But I’ll still bet on this guy!!

As part of the 30th anniversary celebration, Haruto Umezawa would have another profile as part of the Great Jump!! series in 1998.
