Tatsuya Egawa Profile – Jump Multi World 1993

Weekly Shonen Jump

To celebrate Weekly Shonen Jump‘s 25th anniversary, Shueisha decided to create a new style event to promote it’s history for the fans. The name of the event was called “Weekly Jump Multi World” and was a exhibition that was held in the Tokyo Dome Prism Hall between July 28th through August 15th, 1993. The event cost 700 yen for admission and guests were able to receive as special booklet which highlighted some of the items on display. The booklet was never available for sale directly. Over 48 authors provided new illustrations and congratulatory messages for this anniversary and are documented in this booklet and this is one of them. To help provide context to this profile that was captured in 1993, we have included some additional information to supplement the transcription and rough English translation.

おめでたふふ~
25ねん

Congrats ~fufu
25 years old

Congratulations on Jump’s 25th anniversary. I am currently serialized in two seinen magazines, but up until about a year ago I was serialized in Jump for 4 years. I learned so much being a mangaka then, and it’s still a fresh memory for me that I’ll be always grateful for.
Some previous Jump series that have left an impression on me were “Worst”, “Kōya no Shonen Isamu”, “Yabure Kabure”, and etc.
I look forward to more series with protagonists who act more human and shown with a strong artistic vision.

The remaining portion of the article gives a summary of the Magical ☆ Taruruto-kun manga which ran in Weekly Shonen Jump starting in issue 49 in 1988 and concluding with issue 40 in 1992.

The following is some additional context and information not included in the article:

Tatsuya Egawa’s debut serialization was Be Free! which was serialized in Kodansha’s Comic Morning magazine from issue 7 in 1984 through issue 29 in 1988. The series ran for 128 chapters and was originally published as 12 volumes.

Prior to serialization in Weekly Shonen Jump, a oneshot was created for Magical ☆ Taruruto-kun in Weekly Shonen Jump issue 38 in 1988. This would have been published shortly after the Be Free! manga had ended. Below is the author comment Tatsuya Egawa had in the table of contents with a rough English translation:

少年漫画に初挑戦!とっても新鮮な気持ちで描きました。タルるートくんに応援よろしく!!!

This is my first attempt at a shonen manga! I feel refreshed by drawing this. Please support Tarututo-kun!!!

The entire manga series under the title of Magical☆Taruruto is available on Manga Planet in English until March 31, 2026 when the service shuts down.

The Golden Boy manga was the first of the two other serializations Tatsuya Egawa was working on in 1993 when he gave the comment for Jump Multi World. Golden Boy started in Shueisha’s Super Jump magazine in issue 15 in 1992 while the serialization for Magical ☆ Taruruto-kun was still on-going. The new manga was on the cover for the Super Jump issue which was celebrating its first anniversary for changing to a twice-monthly magazine. The series would run in the magazine until issue 20 in 1997.

Tokyo Daigaku Monogatari (東京大学物語) was the other manga series that began its serialization in 1992. It was published in Shogakukan’s Big Comic Spirits magazine starting in issue 1 of 1993 (which was released in late December 1992). The cover of the issue had a “Tatsuya Egawa Presents” bubble in addition to the color pages for the first chapter. In issue 4/5 for the magazine it noted that the series had already received positive reviews. The series would run until 2001 in the magazine.

From Tatsuya Egawa’s Weekly Shonen Jump influences, Worst (ワースト) was written by Kotaro Komuro (小室孝太郎) and ran in the magazine between issue 11 in 1970 through issue 34 in 1971 for a total of 37 chapters. The series had two significant hiatuses during that serialization. The first between issue 17 and issue 32 in 1970, which is returned with being a lead color page. The second hiatus was between issue 47 in 1970 and then returned with another lead color page in issue 19 in 1971.

Kōya no Shōnen Isamu (荒野の少年イサム), has a literal title translation of “Boy of the Wilderness Isamu” and ran in Weekly Shonen Jump from 1971 through 1974 for a total of 111 chapters. The series was written by Sōji Yamakawa (山川惣治) and illustrated by Noboru Kawasaki (川崎のぼる).

Yabure Kabure (やぶれかぶれ) was written by Hiroshi Motomiya (本宮ひろ志) and ran in Weekly Shonen Jump between issues 31 in 1982 through issue 8 in 1983. The series ran for a total of 28 chapters. This was the 8th manga series Hiroshi Motomiya had published in Weekly Shonen Jump.
