Tetsuo Hara Profile – Jump Multi World 1993

Weekly Shonen Jump

To celebrate Weekly Shonen Jump‘s 25th anniversary, Shueisha decided to create a new style event to promote it’s history for the fans. The name of the event was called “Weekly Jump Multi World” and was a exhibition that was held in the Tokyo Dome Prism Hall between July 28th through August 15th, 1993. The event cost 700 yen for admission and guests were able to receive as special booklet which highlighted some of the items on display. The booklet was never available for sale directly. Over 48 authors provided new illustrations and congratulatory messages for this anniversary and are documented in this booklet and this is one of them. To help provide context to this profile that was captured in 1993, we have included some additional information to supplement the transcription and rough English translation.

To celebrate Weekly Shonen Jump‘s 25th anniversary, Tetsuo Hara provided this illustration and comment, which have been roughly translated below:

いよぉ— 二十五周年ようがんばったのお

勝ちつづければそれだけ敵も多くなるこれからもわしにならって傾きつづけようぞ

Alright… 25 years is a great amount.

The more you win, the greater number of enemies you have, so continue to count on me.

25 years of continued sales and success!! A reason to celebrate. It has been over 10 years since I first joined Jump. I’ve never drew manga anywhere else, so Jump’s history means everything to me. I want it to continue to entertain the fans and sell well. However, since it’s grown so much, I feel that there’s more criticisms about it, but that’s the risk of being on top and moving forward.

He also provided this shikishi for the event which was on display at the Jump Multi World event:

The article continues with a 4-panel manga titled “Friendship” (友情) which was enlarged and shown on display at the Jump Multi World event in 1993. A rough English translation of the manga is included below:

Panel 1:

Friendship
“I have paid for the lodging fee, sir.”
“Good.”

Panel 2:

“Sutemaru!”
“Pay for those dumplings as well!”
“Ye… Yes!”
“Then go buy some sake too!”

Panel 3:

“Ugh, Iwabei, the truth is my lord never has any money on him… I do work for him, but he should pay sometimes.”
“The lord must lead by example.”
“Alright, let’s talk some sense into him.”

Panel 4:

“I hate the idea of lords and servants.”
“We’re all people.” And both of you are my friends, who always have my back.”

The article ends with an overview of the recent series Keiji and the previous series, Fist of the North Star.

The following is some additional context and information not included in the article:

Tetsuo Hara’s first oneshot about boxing, Super Challenger (スーパーチャレンジャー), was published in the Weekly Shonen Jump Anime Spring special issue in 1982 and part of the “Sports & Action” titles for the issue. This special issue was published in between the 16th and 17th issues of Weekly Shonen Jump. Below is the author’s comment from that issue (with a rough English translation):

ボクの夢はみたこともないほどスゴくてかがやいている男をかくことだく哲法

My dream is to draw a man who is the most amazing and brilliant person I have ever seen.

His first serialization then began in issue 45 later that year with Iron Don Quixote (鉄のドン・キホーテ). The series only lasted 10 chapters and concluded in Weekly Shonen Jump issue 3 in 1983. He was then paired up with Buronson for the story in Fist of the North Star which started its serialization in issue 41 in 1983. It would continue for 245 chapters and ending in 1988 issue 35. The Fist of the North Star manga is available in English print editions from Viz Media.

He then provided the art for Cyber Blue (CYBER ブルー), which had the story by Bob and script by Ryuichi Mitsui. This series only lasted for 31 chapters, which ran in Weekly Shonen Jump between issue 52 in 1988 through issue 32 in 1989.

The Keiji series would then start its serialization in the 1990 issue 13 in Weekly Shonen Jump. It would end 167 chapters later in issue 33 in 1993, which was around the time the Jump Multi World event was being promoted. The story was by Keiichiro Ryu and the script by Mio Aso.
