As the year 2025 comes to a close, let’s take a look back at the changes in the Monthly Corocoro Comic magazine (月刊コロコロコミック) over the last year. The magazine releases a new issue around the 15th of every month. For this recap, we will look at the numbered issues for 2025, which would span between December 2024 and November 2025 for release dates.
Corocoro is a unique magazine in that it features many comedy and gag-focused series along with some more traditional “action/battle” manga. The other very unique aspect is that there are many manga series that are based on existing IPs (intellectual properties). Frequently these some from videogames and card games as licensed properties, but in more recent years has expanded to YouTubers and virtual personalities. If we sort all of the series in the magazine into these categories, we can have a good visualization of the current breakdown of the magazine.
For comparison, you can check out our 2024 Recap here.
Similar to the previous year, licensed properties continue to dominate the majority of the series within Corocoro. In total there was 24 licensed properties, compared to 18 in the original story. Only 4 of the licensed properties completed their run in the magazine within 2025 and most of them were running for a good portion of the magazine during he year. The exception was with the Shadow the Hedgehog manga, but that was quickly replaced with a brand new Sonic manga to continue the success of the franchisee in the magazine. Towards the end of the year there were 3 new shorter comedy series added to the line-up. Notably these are more focused on food/drinks brand connections.
The original action stories within Corocoro continue to be some of their strongest selling series. Black Channel returned back to the magazine after a short break. Fate Rewinder got an anime announcement, and broke the cover design the magazine has had since the beginning. The new title SHION also has grown in popularity and appears to be a title that will continue to be strong in 2026. Combining all of the action titles for both licensed and original stories, this area of the magazine was the biggest growth that will continue into the next year.
However on the original comedy/gag stories tells a different story in 2025. While there were 3 new manga series in this category, all of them were also concluded within the same year. Additionally, I’m 1 Yen-kun will also have its final chapter in the first issue of 2026. Butamen and Homeroom Ninja Mr. Shinobu concluded their runs in the magazine as well. Akumakko Piruke and Private Strawberry Prince Elementary School are 2 series that jump between the print issues of Corocoro while still having weekly chapters in Corocoro Online. Outside of the long standing Corocoro series in the magazine, the amount of comedy stories that are within Monthly Corocoro Comic appear to be having a serious reduction for the content of the magazine. The shift towards more action oriented series appears to be more of the focus moving into 2026.
The end of the year also saw the release of the first issue of Corociao magazine. This is a magazine that contained over 20 brand new serializations for Monthly Corocoro Comic, Weekly Corocoro Online, and Ciao magazine. Three of the titles in Corociao will continue their serialization in Monthly Corocoro Comic starting with the first issue in 2026. Ciao will then continue the serialization of 6 of the titles in their print and digital magazine. Weekly Corocoro Online will also release all of the titles in Corociao magazine. This new irregularly released magazine then helps drive a new wave of titles for Corocoro going into 2026. Next year, if another issue of Corociao is published may also help continue to redefine what new serializations will be added and the how they are first published.
